Chapter eleven

“A re you ready?” Xornaa asked Tarq, who was sitting on the passenger seat of the vehicle in his insectoid form, which Xornaa felt would take some serious getting used to.

“Hell, no. I cannot believe Jim talked me into doing this, ” he responded and then went back to biting his fingernails. Between that and his twitching eyelids, he couldn’t have been a more cliché of a nervous person if he tried.

“Come on. How bad can it be? Worst case scenario, you’ll have to blow up your own brain. It’ll be fun to watch.”

Tarq gave her a hurt look. “What is up with this tight leather suit? It cannot possibly be comfortable to fight in.”

She carefully wiped off a speck of dust from her shoulder. “It looks cool, and black brings out my eyes.”

“Wearing that, I do not think anyone would look at your eyes.”

Xornaa smiled and got out of the vehicle.

They were in front of Kanoor’s presidential palace, an exotic structure with multiple gold-domed towers and white pillars. Some two hours ago, they’d landed on the planet, far enough from population centers so that no one could see them while they left Phantom. Tarq contacted President Barook and arranged an urgent meeting, saying he had information on an imminent attack he wanted to share; then they drove straight to the presidential palace. The guards at the main gate were too affected by Xornaa’s “charm” to stop them (in fact, they continued to stare from a distance, mouths collectively half-open), and now here they were, in the belly of the beast as Jim had said, the most dangerous place for people intent on defeating the Xenoakakies.

Xornaa scratched her forehead and doubted her own sanity for coming here. If things went sideways, and they always did, the two of them had no chance of walking out of here alive, full slut-mode or not.

Tarq walked toward the two guards at the main entrance. “I am Commander Tarq, and I am here to meet President Barook.”

The two guards, staring at Xornaa with wide eyes, didn’t even look at him.

“Oh, for crying out loud,” murmured Tarq and walked past the guards. Xornaa followed him.

“Maybe you should turn down your powers a notch?” Tarq asked her. “Save your energy for when we meet Barook and the High Council?”

Xornaa chuckled. “You got it backward. This is how I naturally am. I usually get my powers under control not to disturb the people around me, but I’ve got to admit, unleashing it on Xenoakakies is so much fun.” Then she touched her earpiece. “Where are they?”

“Third floor, second door on the left,” replied Allen. “The insects have no idea we’re flying over their head. If nothing else, we can just blow up the palace and run away.”

“And that helps us how?” asked Xornaa.

“Revenge,” snarled Allen, “which I’m told is a dish best served cold. Three years after the fall of Earth, I’d say it’s cold enough.”

“Let’s just stick to the plan, shall we?” asked Xornaa matter-of-factly. “At least for the time being.
